x2. That motor's peak HP is @ 4900 rpm. Don't be afraid to let 'er rip if you need the power. Also, tow/haul mode may help the transmission by locking the torque converter when it may not otherwise be and firming up the shifts. Unless it's really brain-dead, use it.
Yup, if you're only turning 3-4000rpm, you're not twisting the motor hard enough. Put it in tow/haul and hammer down. That's what it's built for. Power is power, doesn't matter what makes it. Get the most out of what you have before you concern yourself with any upgrades.
