I towed a 5,000lb TT for 10 years with a 2004 Durango 5.7L. Heading up the rim from Payson I was down to around 45mph. If I downshifted I could easily hit 55mph at around 5,000rpm. Really didn't like pushing things that hard. While I no longer tow with the Durango we still have it. 14 years old with 178,000 miles and no major repairs!
Used to tow my 7000 lb TT up those same mountains with my 99 Tahoe 5.7L with lots of mods and 45 mph was my TOP speed on the steepest parts on the last leg at altitude. Still have it but for the last 4 years been using my 2000 F350 DRW 7.3. What a difference!! Now it’s 65 up those same sections and much less stress. Was up on the rim for 9 days of boondocking over Labor Day.
