My experience is that gas engine vehicles have considerably less "tow comfort". I tow a 10,500 lb 5ver. I had a 2009 GMC 2500 6.0l gas engine. Traveling from Wichita, KS to Mesa, AZ that truck down shifted every 10 miles between Wichita and Holbrook AZ and I could never use the cruise control. My 2013 GMC 2500 6.6l diesel downshifted once and I used the cruise control most of the way.
With the 6.0l gas we took a trip to California and coming back up over the continental divide we were turning 5000 rpm and only moving at 40 mph as we approached the top.
I told the wife at that time if we ever do this again we will have a diesel. a year later I bought one and never looked back.
Your experience is not uncommon for your gas engine tow vehicle and trailer you are pulling. If you can live with it and it fits your needs just move on. I get it that the Nissan fits your family and other more appropriate vehicles may not be within your budget so you do what you have to to get out there.
