Why do rpmaphobic diesel lovers think 5k rpm is screaming yet think 3k rpm is loafing along? They are both a blur that you couldn't even begin to see clearly. Even 70rpm is honkin' right along for a human being doing the work on a bicycle. I run my boat's Yamaha engine 7500rpm for hours at a time heading out into the Gulf and back. It's never been a problem to run an engine within it's designed power band. Cringe is not an engine weakness. It's a driver's perception weakness. The only notable interstate mountain grade we see in our travels around the southeast is Monteagle Pass. OTR trucks are always easing up the pass. We just run along with them. If 40-50mph were unsafe, those OTR trucks would be constantly getting rear ended. I like to run up at whatever speed will allow 3800-4200rpm. I simply like the sound of the engine at that rpm. So 2k rpm is a blur. 5k rpm is a blur. Both are perfectly normal rpm for the engines. Neither is loafing along. How much time do you actually spend climbing grades? To some, it's worth $10k more to the cost of a truck to avoid wetting themselves at the sound of a downshift. Let 'em go. If they think it's a race, they're missing the point.
Hannibal's post should be a sticky ! This whole discussion of "rpm" comes up all the time.
And to comment about the poster that wondered what rear gear the Armada has, yes, it's very tall. Possibly a 2.93, but also possible a 3.36 if it had "big tow" package. The op will need to run it in second or third gear on the hills to get the revs he needs.
Ughhh! Unfortunately that’s not how it works! Changing the gears changes the overall ratio of each gear in the trans effectively making each gear more efficient. So just “dropping a gear” isn’t the same as changing a ring and pinion! That’s why it’s called a final drive ratio. It has the final say of what the trans ratios end up being.
And regarding rpm, it’s all relative. a diesel pulling 3k rpm is screaming, just as a gasser is “screaming” at 5k rpm. It’s all in how you look at it
Dropping a gear is a crutch. Changing the final drive ratio, changes the personality of the truck
Every gear becomes more powerful, and engine braking improves in all gears. This helps the brakes downstream, and upstream the motor, tranny, and u joints have an easier time.
