If I downsize my travel trailer from a 4800 lbs trailer
To a 3800 lbs trailer is it a big difference ?
All else being equal, no your gas mileage likely won't change at all.
Things that could improve your mileage when selecting a new trailer:
1. If the new trailer is rounded on front and back (like an Airstream or the fibreglass eggs) your mileage could improve.
2. If the new trailer is narrower (7' wide instead of 8' wide) your mileage could improve slightly - probably not a lot though.
3. If the new trailer is significantly shorter your mileage could improve slightly.
As you might guess from the above list, it's all about the aerodynamics - how hard is it to get the air around the big wall you're trying to pull down the road. #1 makes it a lot easier for the air to go around and #2 and #3 decrease the amount of air that has to go around.
