I did some testing with my 99 Tahoe in auto 4x4.
On a dirt road in 2 WD, punch it and it spins the tires, (duh).
4WD auto, punch it and maybe 1/2 rotation wheel spin just as if it were locked in 4x4.
4WD auto locks the front axles but there is a computer controlled clutch in the transfer case that engages and disengages in a split second when 4x4 is needed. That is probably why it uses auto trans fluid instead of 80/90wt gear oil. I would suspect if you really beat on the vehicle hard in sand, mud, etc you could burn that clutch up because you should be in real locked 4x4 for that situation.
