I'll be shopping for a new (or new-ish) truck shortly for pulling a medium size trailer or 5th wheel. It seems like the vast majority of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks around here are 4WD, with jut a few 2WD...
You can't find 2wd trucks on lots in Idaho for good reason, outside of a few regular cab contractor type trucks. I would never get a 2wd truck. Honestly you'd lose more in depreciation the instant you drove off the lot than you pay for 4wd. In my part of the country anyway. I suppose down south where 2wd is more common the depreciation hit would be smaller. I use it frequently whether it's snow/ice in the winter or offroad in the spring/summer/fall.
