I have a 2WD and wish I had 4WD but would probably never use it. When it snows the trailer is in storage and the dually sits in the driveway while the AWD SUV is in use. I guess it depends on the weather where you live. Here are a few contrarian views:
- Resale value is worse on 2WD which is bad if you are a seller. This is good if you are a buyer as it sounds like you are. It gives you an opportunity to pick up a really nice truck at a low price and one that probably has never been beat up off road. Less competition from other buyers.
- 2WD will sit lower and may fit your trailer better. Easier to climb in and out of.
- Generation 3 Rams 2WD trucks had rack and pinion steering which delivered better tracking and less wandering. Can't say about other brands and newer vehicles.
- With 2WD you don't have the overwhelming desire to lift it and put oversize tires on it.
