I'll be shopping for a new (or new-ish) truck shortly for pulling a medium size trailer or 5th wheel. It seems like the vast majority of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks around here are 4WD, with jut a few 2WD...
Where I live 2wd is not a consideration. If I lived in the south and wanted to save money I could see buying a 2wd and keeping a set of chains with me for the rare times 2wd isn't enough. When I can't move in 2wd I almost always try locking the rear axle to see if it makes the difference before switching to 4wd. I can't remember a time that it made the difference.
