I'll be shopping for a new (or new-ish) truck shortly for pulling a medium size trailer or 5th wheel. It seems like the vast majority of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks around here are 4WD, with jut a few 2WD...
Personally I wouldn't own a 2wd unless finances dictated, but I use 4wd and it is a necessity sometimes. You should know after 4 pages that payload on paper is less with 4wd but real world it's the same. The last consideration I have is typically 4wd front suspensions feel stiffer and imo feel more heavy duty, but that's subjective.
