I've owned 2wd and 4wd and I'll take the 4x4 any time, even if I only use it on rare occasions. I like exploring when we are out camping and I hate having to turn back just because the road gets a little rough or steep. I'm not a radical 4 wheeler by any means and I know my limitations, but I'd rather be limited by good sense rather than by not having enough vehicle.
I had an '80 Toyota 4x4 that was a beast in the back country. Drove it all over Colorado for 8 years (fairly slowly, since the 4 banger would only get me about 45 mph up most hills in the mountains). Went to an '89 2wd Toyota PU (it was what I could afford at the time) and had that one for 14 years. I was often disappointed in not being able to go where I wanted to go, and I missed a few days of work when it simply would not go in the snow, even with a topper and 100 pounds of sand over the rear axle.
My wife has a 2010 Ford Edge AWD, and I have a 2016 F-150 XLT Scab 3.5L EB 4x4. We would not be without 4 wheel drive these days. When we were shopping for a new truck last fall, there was nothing on the lot but 4x4's - not one 2wd to be seen.
