4WD vs 2WD
I'll be shopping for a new (or new-ish) truck shortly for pulling a medium size trailer or 5th wheel. It seems like the vast majority of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks around here are 4WD, with jut a few 2WD...

The only reason aside from compromised traction situations to run 4x4 is to run it in 4x4 low range for maneuvering the trailer in tight spaces.
You would absolutely, positively, NOT run the truck in 4x4 on hard dry roads. In that situation it would operate the same as any 2WD truck.
