4WD vs 2WD
I'll be shopping for a new (or new-ish) truck shortly for pulling a medium size trailer or 5th wheel. It seems like the vast majority of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks around here are 4WD, with jut a few 2WD...

I don't think the same as you! I see three good reasons for having a 4x4 especially the first one!!
I wouldn't need a 4x4 on a daily or annual basis really. Hard for me to justify maintaining another axle, take a little bit less capacity, a little less mpg, and pay a little bit more for three events over the course of 300,000+ miles across North America. If I ever really get stuck then AAA or CAA can get me out, but I have yet to make that call. I've called them plenty of times for other stuff, but extraction hasn't been one.
The point of the post was to show having 4WD isn't necessary to get out of a few simple situations. Yes it might be easier and more convenient to flick a switch and go, but that doesn't equate to necessity. If you have to climb up snow covered mountains, drive the equivalent of trails, or have to drive through a mud hole to get home then by all means get a 4WD as it would be a better option. We all live in different situations so buy whatever fits for you. I don't run into 4WD only situations enough so a 2WD works just fine.
