Y'know, reading some of these posts it amazes me that I survived in Northwestern Montana (11 miles from the West Entrance of Glacier National Park) from 1958 (when I first got a driver license) to 1970 (when I got my first 4X4).
We went fishing and hunting, over mountain passes, in all kinds of weather, in vehicles like a 1950 Plymouth Station Wagon, a 1939 Ford coupe, a 1941 Buick Special, a 1936 Ford half ton pickup, etc. My senior year of high school I drove a 1941 Chevy coupe all winter. No problems.
My step-father was a logger. He never owned a 4X4 back then, yet he got to the
camp every week, and brought home a load of firewood every weekend.
We must have been incredibly lucky...
