Like the OP, I've never really needed 4x4 where I live and the type of camping we do. I don't go off road.
Having said that, I get the argument for 4x4 as insurance and resale value.
To me, the negatives were; would very rarely use 4x4, maintenance is a bit more, the initial cost of the truck is more, and it's one more thing to have a problem with. Too me, it just did not make sense.
The interesting thing is my choice to go with the 2x4 made my search more difficult because the majority of the RAM CTD tucks on the dealer lots around here are 4x4 so my selection was smaller. Still got the truck I wanted though. 4x4 makes sense if you need it!
