Gotta give my dad, rest his soul, mad props for NEVER owning a 4wd truck.
His exact words when I bought my first, 2nd, 3rd......4x4 were " I've been driving ____years and never needed a 4wd. Waste of money!" For him, he was right. The man could drive and he drove around the situations that required it.....and put buicks a lot further down trails and logging roads than anyone should. That said, guess what mom did as soon as he died? Got a nice 4x4 Z71 so she didn't have to worry about snow tires, posi traction, adding weight to the bed, etc.
Because of him, I can reccomend getting a 2 wheeler and using that thing between your ears a little more to get where you're going, but I doubt you'll ever see a 2 wheeler in my garage. Although we do use trucks where 4x4 IS a necessity.
However, I'm the guy that won't shift er into 4wd until absolutely necessary. Drives my wife nuts, but "dad wouldn't have needed it."
If money was tight, you can bet I'd buy a 2 wheeler if I needed a truck on a strict, low budget. But it would be old and used. Having the $ to buy a brand new truck, one is better served with a 4x4 unless the duties are pavement pounding only and no winter weather towing.
