550HP tow vehicle available now!

For those that like to tow fast or just want a sports vehicle in the garage rather than a pickup you should check out the new Porsche Cayenne. Unfortunately, I cannot find the article online but Boating magazine just did a review on it as a tow vehicle and seemed quite impressed. They towed a 5,400lb boat over passes 7,387ft high and were amazed with how well it did. It has a tow rating of 7,716lbs and 553 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated to 60mph in 9.45s with the boat in tow. Price is only $168,225. Makes an F350 King Ranch look cheap at only 70K or so. And people here keep complaining about overpriced pickups!

Seriously, it cost more than the 5 vehicles and two boats I have put together but it was an interesting read. It also shows that pickups could get even fancier and more powerful.

If you get one tell us about it. I am still debating whether to get the Lariat or just the XLT on my next tow vehicle.

  • If this seems too redicolous, look at some of the consumer ratings of the Porsche and the VW Toureg as well.
  • There have been 550hp tow vehicles available for quite some time, at a comparable cost. Although they don't accelerate quite as fast, they can tow over 100,000 pounds and have 2000 ft/lbs of torque. As an added bonus, some can handle 30,000 lb. pin weights, which should be sufficient for most RVs on the market today. ;)
  • Throw an intake, exhaust and a tuner on any diesel pickup and it would eat the Cayenne's lunch and save you $100k.
  • I'll stick with my BMW X5 35d. It was only $66,000 new, and while it only offers 265 HP and 425 ft-lbs of torque, and is only rated to tow 6,000 lbs, I bet it would do fine with that 5,400 lb boat over those mountains. It has twin turbos, so the altitude would make no difference, and while I've not towed 5,400 lbs, I have towed 5,000 lbs, close enough. Couldn't tell the trailer was even there.

    I think I'll take the $102,000 I saved and go camping . . . .
  • $168k???? I could buy a really nice used DP and have enough left over for an enclosed trailer and an even nicer muscle car!!!............and still have money left over for fuel!
  • 168k ? That's more than some people's houses.

    No thanks.

As for the Lariat vs. XLT, it depends if the Mrs. wants her own climate control. You can't get dual zone climate control in an XLT.

    That's my only hangup.
