Are you looking to tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel?
There is a company or two that makes a 6 door pickup out of a crewcab, by installing 2 more doors and extending the already long wheelbase another 24".
Others are using E-350 with the V10 engine to tow up to about 9,000 pound travel trailers.
Some are using the 8 passenger Excursion for a tow vehicle, it came in 7.3L v8 up until 2003, and then the less reliable 6L V8 diesel, as well as V10 option that pulled like a race horse.
Other options include 3/4 ton Suburban, trying to stuff everyone in a pickup cab, and vans.
I have a shuttle bus. It was built on the E-450 chassis, and only weighs about 9,000 pounds, with a 14,050 GVWR. So in theory, I could have 3,000 pounds in the van, tow a total of 10,000 pounds and have a hitch weight around 1,500+. The GCVWR of my E-450 shuttle van is 22,000 pounds. It has a V10, and only 54,000 miles on it. I bought it to carry around my daughter in a wheelchair, but no longer need it for that reason. I had always thought about getting a toyhauler - so she could drive up the ramp and inside, but that will not happen now.
Have fun shopping around for a travel trailer or fifth wheel and truck.
If you do go the fifth wheel route, select the fifth wheel first, then get the truck. To many end up with a heavy duty 2500 pickup with a 2,400 pound cargo rating, then start looking at fifth wheels only to find out they require a truck with a 3,000+ pound cargo rating, and your family probably will be around 1,000 pounds as well (when they stop growing and stop going on camping trips in a few years).
My sister bought the truck first. Now she tows a small 30' toyhauler travel trailer with her 18' long aluminum boat inside (on it's own trailer) but plans on upgrading to a 40' fifth wheel toyhauler. She started out with a 1500 GMC, but it overheated pulling the toyhauler up to the lake, so she upgraded to a F-150 ecoboost. They where really happy with the performance, but on a trip to Colorado, they came home with a 2016 F-350 dually. So now they are ready for the upgrade in fifth wheels!
