With the exception of 2, however. From a stop, it will start in 2 if that range is selected. It is to reduce torque and improve traction on slick roads. My '05 4 spd had the same feature. Seems needless since the truck has traction and stability control, too -- it will limit wheel spin on ice in 1st gear -- but that is the feature.
Actually, I find this feature to be very usefull on a 1 ton van in deep sand. In first gear when the tires start spinning we get undesirable wheel hop, which is horrenduos with the 1 ton suspension on our van. Yeah, traction control would have eliminated the wheel spinning, but the vehicle then would loose alot of it's forward momentum, causing more throttle input, causing more wheel spin, causing more wheel hop.
Put it in M2 (with tow haul off) and I was able to make it through deep sand withot wheel spin that I wasn't able to "comfortably" make it through in 1st.
Tystevens, just curious, what gear does your truck use when towing your camper on flat ground?
