Or the multitude of times that the trans will shuffle gears on rolling terrain, when using cruise control. The transmission doesn't anticipate terrain, so if you are trying to get that extra 1 mpg, (which on our annual 5000 mile trip is nice), with the Ford, the ability to manually select whatever gear amuses the driver is there. The Ford (like pretty much every new vehicle), has an electronically controlled throttle, so "lugging" the engine in a damaging sense, is not longer possible.
Or when climbing hills, and you don't want the redline downshift to 2nd, or 1st or whatever, you can use full throttle, and shift when it is appropriate. My truck drops to 2nd, and 6500 rpms occasionaly, I prefer to avoid it.
Part of this shifting feature, is a real-time gear indication as well, even when not using manual or range select, (which functions the same as GM's manual mode, except the Tow/Haul engine braking is fully functional, another bonus.
