7 pin cord

Good evening, Can anyone tell me on the 7 pin plug, where the 12 volt power gets wired too?

  • On another note, we sometimes take our little pop up with us so kids can sleep in it. Wife pulls with her 4-runner. The 7 pin cord is not long enough to reach the plug in on the 4 runner. Not sure why, but Toyota mounted this plug in way up in underneath the vehicle. Does anyone know the best place to get a simple 24" or so extension with male and female ends?

The 7-way trailer cord purpose is to operate your trailer safety lights and electric brakes if you have them installed. In some cases the 12VDC from the truck is available for connection to your trailer installed battery but not always the case. My truck has to have a relay and separate fuse installed in the truck fuse panel to engage trailer tow charge. My trailer tow charge from the truck is only active when the truck ignition switch is turned on.

My trailer 7-way cable is terminated into a metal junction box just under the frame of the trailer tongue area. All of the trailer lights, trailer emergency brakes quick-disconnect, and a 12VDC line to connect to the battery comes from this electrical junction box. The line that feeds the trailer battery has an in-line fuse in it.

This Has nothing to do with the trailer 12VDC system which is controlled by the Trailer 12VDC Power Distribution Panel. This 12VDc Distribution Panel is powered only the on-board converter/charger when plugged into shore power and is also powered by the trailer installed Battery setup.

This is a 30AMP electrical diagram that shows how all of this is setup that might be helpful for you to identify where things are.

This is a typical 7-way trailer wiring setup from ETRAILER.COM - Wiring colors may differ by the various manufactures.

    Hope this helps...

    This.
  • O.P. has a 1979 Shasta- more likely to have been originally wired with a Bargman 7-round rather than the newer blade-type.

Black wire would still be 12v power, though. Typically those went to a an interior junction box, there distributed via fused lines to the converter (already connected to the battery) and perhaps the fridge if equipped with the three-way that was standard at the time.
  • Thanks for the charts. But the problem is on the trailer side of the cord, what does the 12 volt power get hooked to on the rv?

The RV Trailers cable uses blade connectors verses pins.

This is a diagram from ETRAILER.COM shown the 7-way cable wiring.

the BLADE READ OUT is as follows

Wire colors may be different depending on the manufacture.

Hope this helps. ETRAILER.COM is an excellent source for any and all information concerning TRAILER WIRING.

  • I know its on the cover on my truck. I know I have a wire looped to have the running lights of the trailer on and its the top two pins thinking clock wise but the camper has been put away since Oct.
  • I believe it is the black wire, but check etrailer.com and search 7 pole connector.
