A large LiFePO4 battery inside the coach safety concerns?

I've been pondering a large lithium-iron (the safe type) battery pack that would be housed inside the trailer (Black Rock 20RD), likely under the bed. I've done a lot of Googling on the battery technology, but I'm most concerned about the safety issues, if any. BTW, the reason for "inside" is it makes it easier to keep the battery temp within usable range.
Any thoughts on this?

Did not realize your camper will be in weather outside of -40 to 140 F so not sure why it needs to be under the bed as opposed to a more fireproof box. I can buy three AMGs for one LiFePO4 battery 12V/100AH...my 10 year old AMGs are still going strong. I guess the question is will a LiFePO4 still be going strong in 30 years?
  • I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. Curious... how large? What brand? What charger?
  • LiFePO4 batteries are inherently safer than the other types of Li-Ion batteries. I am not sure how well the perform at very low temperatures. Not that cold weather will damage them, but they probably will not work as well.

Ive been looking at CALB liFePo batteries. $130 per 3.2v 100AH cell. A 500ah setup would be $2600 of batteries. A programable charge controller is all that is needed to charge them.
  • To your safety question: IMO, anytime you have a containment of high energy, it should be enclosed so that any catastrophic failure can be somewhat contained. I'd think a metal tool box would be fairly appropriate.
FWIW, I have five batteries inside my trailer, 3 AGM's and two FLA. The FLA batteries are in their own vented box and the AGM's are inside a cabinet enclosure.

    And a balancer.

"China Aviation batteries (formerly Sky Energy) come standard with a 2-year warranty against internal cell failure, when properly used with a quality BMS"

That's the part that gets messy, and why I chose a self-contained pack with all that already in it.

I wouldn't have a problem with them under the bed. LifePo4's don't fail spectacularly like LiPo's. When LiPo's fail you end up with a really large fire spewing torch. LifePo4's chemistry is so stable that fire risk is pretty much nonexistent. If you're somehow able to get them to the point of failure, the cell just pops and out gases without fire. There's more of a fire risk from the devices and wires feeding the battery.
