For me, $8500 isn't a huge amount of money. A lot of new trailers depreciate more than that in the first year. If you're paying cash and can live with the possibility of the trailer being too damaged to keep, I'd say go for it. It's exactly what you want.
Maybe the guy would let you hook it up and tow it 50 or 100 miles and see if it stays together
