The rear wheel speed sensor is located on the transfer case, not the rear wheels. That is if you have a transfer case.

It is two-wheel drive. It has a limited slip differential, which was rebuilt with a "bearing kit" two years ago at 171,349 kms (fifth wheel trailer was hard on that) I cannot relate the ABS issue to that time when the repair was done.
Left front wheel bearing job done back then too. Looks like they had the ABS connection up on the frame apart--the wrap around cover is missing, but the connections seem ok.
ABS dash light is off for now, so good time to wiggle and pull on wires to see if it comes back on doing something. Nope, still off.
I did find something wrong yesterday, which might explain the issue, but too soon to know. The battery is not held tight on its tray (the hold down has gone missing) and the positive connection to the battery was not all the way tight.
With truck movement, the battery can move and that would have moved the connection a little, but not broken the connection. I am thinking a transient voltage change could result though. At some point when the battery slides back just right maybe the voltage is better so the light goes out. Fits the story anyway.
Several "possibles" for this issue include funny voltages from various causes confusing the ABS. Loose battery not a very likely explanation, just have to wait and see.
