It connects to the back of the thermostat on one end and the A/C unit on the other.
Some thermostats connect the wires with friction locks and it’s possible they got the insulated part of the wire in there too far. It couldn’t hurt to pull the thermostat and check. Look for a GL or gray labeled pin.
If you don't have a through ceiling ac then you have to go on the roof take the ad apart the control box is in the area where the filter would be
