Ya, don't throw it away just yet. Wait until you see the price of a whole new unit!!
Could even be the thermostat. On my unit the fan is on whenever I turn the unit on but, the compressor doesn't kick in until the thermostat tells it to. I would use a jumper wire past the thermostat first and see what happens. Be careful !!! This is high voltage. If you don't feel comfortable doing this work ask for help from someone that does.
