I think a lot depends upon your tongue weight. Mine is prolly around 1300# now with the four batteries on the tongue. Also, being retired, we put a lot of miles on the trailer. So things do get beat up.
After several years, the wear on our previous 2" receiver was such that I had to re-adjust the tilt of the Equal-I-Zer tension bars to compensate. There was over an inch of up/down play where the bars sat on the hangers.
With the new truck and 2.5" receiver, we got almost that amount of play after only a single year when using the 2" sleeve and the old 2" shank. There was also some "egging" of the pin hole in the receiver. So I switched to a 2.5" Curt shank which fits much tighter.
Generally, I think if your tongue weight is 1000-1200# or over, a 2.5" receiver and shank will last a lot longer than 2". Not sure at what TW you would want a 3".
I do carry the sleeve and a light weight, non-WDH hitch in the truck for those times when the WDH is too much trouble and unnecessary.
