I have refilled the smaller green bottles, but like you, with limited success. Once I read about the safety issues involved, I stopped refilling them. To me it's just not worth the risks only to save a couple of bucks.
The steak saver type adapters are great in a pinch and if your like me, I get pinched a lot.
I have never seen a steak saver adapter that can be used to refill old green bottles as well, but I could be wrong.
