A CEL is set by a fault. If your EGR was stuck yes it could set a CEL. And once cleaned and operational the CEL would go away after a couple drive cycles if not cleared with a reader first. I have not heard of any manufacturer triggering a CEL for maintenance. That is just poor design practice. If your truck requires this maintenance it was just coincidence it failed at that maintenance interval. In fact, that would suggest the required maintenance interval is too long if the part fails before the require service is performed.
