After a hard pull on tow vehicle

After a hard pull do you do anything out of ordinary with your vehicle? I just wait for temps to get back down to normal before shutting off.

Hard pull yesterday at over 90 degrees in higher elevations. Lots of ups and downs. Trans over 220 (usually 180) coolant almost pegged out. One of the few times I wish I had a manual trans instead of auto. Used second a lot to keep egt's under 1200.
Open to suggestions. Thanks

  • '01 6spd with Edge-EZ I cannot get the coolant out of the 'normal' range on the gauge. Maybe the hot trans temps helped push the engine temperature up?

As Old-Biscuit said, the 47/48RE transmissions do not circulate fluid in Park, so extended idle and cooldowns should be done with the transmission in Neutral.

If you frequent these speeds/pulls, install a lock-up switch so that you can manually lock the torque convertor to keep the transmission cooler.

I did a climb last summer with slow traffic and construction that had me running 20-30mph (my TC auto locks above 25mph when I manually select 2nd), and I was at 218* on the trans but the coolant temp stayed in check (maybe 210* at the most). When traffic stopped, I set my high idle at 1500rpm and in Neutral to get airflow across the exchanger for the trans.
  • Your rad likely needs to be pulled and cleaned out. A 2001 truck can collect a lot of bugs, dirt, and oil vapor from the puke bottle. Mine looked similar to this one when I pulled it out of my 2002 Dodge/Cummins.

  • X3, the coolant temp should never peg out. Something is wrong with your cooling system.

I let mine cool to 300 degrees on the EGT gauge.
I would also be worried about almost pegging the coolant temp!!! Time for a new T-stat, and radiator flush!!! Pushing hard, I rarely see 200 degrees.
  • I don't do anything as usually I am going through streets/ parking lot or campground so that i all my gets. If you have a turbo then you should be cautious.
  • "coolant almost pegged out" is something to worry about. Your temperature gauge shouldn't move no matter how hard you pull.
  • After a hard pull............

Usually by the time I exit, drive to rest area/campground etc EGRs have dropped enough to safely shut down

Having pre-turbo EGR Temo Gauge I can see the cool down occur.
350*F and dropping is good enough

No EGR gauge.........2 minutes of idle and shutdown

Dodge tranny......no pump/fluid flow when in park so put in neutral to circulate tranny fluid
  • Have you ever had the radiator boiled out???? Is the fan clutch kicking in? Do you have 4:10 or 3.54 gears?

  • I let mine cool for a few minutes before shutting it down. Just a few though, but I do make sure the trans temp is on the way way back down first.... Definitely let the engine coolant temp return to to normal, becaus if it boils after shut down that can warp the heads.
