I definitely had to beef up my receiver. My extensions, are actually two pieces. I have a receiver extension with a step, and an extended ball mount. The first extension measures 13 1/2" from receiver to receiver, and the second part measures 14" from the second receiver to the ball, for a total of 27 1/2" of extension from my truck receiver. Definitely over 2' but not a crazy amount. I have seen 48" extensions like Super Truss, Reese Titan, etc. Here are some pics below. The turnbuckles are not load bearing, they are used just to take the side to side movement out of the first extension, eliminating the infamous "clunking" noise.
