Air Bags?

Hey all,

Just bought a 2014 Ram 2500, 6.4 gasser, Longhorn Crew Cab. My previous TV was an 01 Silvy 1500...so it will be a nice upgrade.

My question comes in a couple of different parts. With the TV, I'll be pulling a 30ft TT. My question is do I need air bags in the back to help with squat? I haven't had the TT hooked up yet, still in the barn, so I don't know exactly how much squat there will be. I do I have a WD hitch. I'm guessing I'll be okay running stock, but I would like to do what I can to make things easier.

If I should get/do need airbags, should I level in the front as well? What kind of ride could I expect with an airbag/leveled front set-up while towing?

Thanks in advance. I did search and found some info, but I wanted a more custom response.

  • Hello.
What is the toungue weight of your TT. Check the receiver load limits. You may even have to weld a receiver inplace. No matter what, when you add weight to the bumper any vehicle will drop some. Overloads will help. An assist air bag setup may also be in order. But! There is a limit to what they will handle. You may want to check out a air type hitch. Air ride hitches will remove the shock or road bounce to some degree.
  • If you search for "air bags" you should see a thread talking about this same issue. I asked a similar question and received some great comments.
  • You are likely doubling the payload with the new TV. I doubt air bags are necessary. Use a WDH. It restores front axle weight for improved handling as well as reduces the rear axle load. Skip air bags. IMHO they have little use towing a TT. They complicate WDH adjustment and mask overloaded situations.

    Congrats on the new truck!
  • I would hitch up and setup the hitch for the new TV and see what you have before adding something you may not need. I thought I was going to need them also when I got the 5th wheel, but found they were not needed so I did not add any. I am level when hitched.
  • What weights do you have? You need to know the tongue weight, the GVWR of the trailer. If the chevy was doing OK with your TT, I'd guess that the Ram will do fantastic too, but it's best to check your weights to be sure.

That Ram truck is NICE. I drive a 3500 dually diesel and love my truck. How much? Ask my wife, I normally trade every two years, but I'm not even looking after 3 1/2 years. I just may have found a keeper!
  • If you have a properly rated wd hitch and don't fill the truck bed full of heavy stuff the air bags won't be needed. It will be easier to set up the hitch with out them too.
