Air bags?

Why air bags? To level a load that is too heavy on the hitch? Because the tow vehicle is towing too heavy for its rating? To make the road surfaces easier on the back side? Help us understand, please. Options? Thanks!
  • Just think of how much money all those poor nose high guys are saving by taking the weight off their front ends. I mean when the number 3 selling truck runs level, you have to replace the ball joints every 50-60,000 miles!
  • A thread about air bags becomes brand-bashing within one reply! YES!!

Can't wait to check back on this one in a few hours...
  • Should not be used for a travel trailer. Weight distributing system far more effective and does a lot more than air bags which can only prop up the rear but can't do the more important job of replacing weight on the front axle.
  • My 2011 F250 has such a soft suspension (great for an unloaded ride) that adding bags really helped with the lights blinding other drivers. With only 700# tongue weight, it's certainly not overloaded.... Even had to adjust the aiming of the headlights down quite a bit. I honestly think the headlights were out of adjustment straight from the factory.
  • You guys are funny...I can show all kinds of pictures of "brand name...number one selling" trucks with 600/700 lb quads in the box with their arses dragging and their noses in the air. I've loaded my 650lb quad on the deck and had the old tt hooked, no sagging truck levels out without aid of air bags...unlike the number one selling truck.

Its not a truck "brand" thing like this guy wants everyone to believe... Any truck with the right load can be runnin on the overload springs which creates a horrible ride. Bags are simply to level the truck back out and improve ride. They do not increase you load rating of the truck.

Well stated! As far as the brand guy goes, look at his signature. He doesn't even seem to know the "brand" of his own truck.

  • I have them on my 1-ton dually because the pin weight puts the truck down on the overload springs which makes for a pretty rough ride. With 50 psi in my Firestone air bags the truck is lifted off the overloads, which smooths out the ride tremendously.
  • Improve the ride when towing and leveling out the truck. Have them installed on my truck and the last two.

My truck sags about 1 1/2 inches when loaded.
Inflated to 8# unloaded and 40 to 45# loaded.

The other item that helps is a good set of shocks - installed Bilsteins at 22,000 miles on my 2011. On my previous trucks I installed them after purchasing the truck - just did not like the ride of the OEMs.

    2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD SE ECLB 4X4
