Pep Boys and places like Sears sell 12v portable air compressors that are pretty good. I've got the Pep Boys one it comes in a small carrying case with hose and cord. Also has a built in gauge but I never trust them. My son carries one that has a preset function. Just set the pressure you want and it shuts off when it reaches the pressure. They're only about $40 and small so they don't take up much room.
