Air mattress or plywood under foam mattress on sleep sofa?

Trying to find a solution for my sleeping arrangement on the pull out sleeping sofa when my granddaughter camps with us.
Other than the frame digging into me all night it’s ok. I’m thinking slide plywood sections under the foam mattress or place an air mattress on top.
Anyone found a solution?

  • are sofa sleeper sucks to i have the pool noddle on the center bar did not help then tried the air mattress which helped but the mattress would move everytime you rolled over during the night and if you got to close to the edge it would buck you out of bed and now we just place a foam topper on it.
  • Firm mattress topper or futon for me. Air mattresses tend to sag too much for me, I like a really firm bed, find many "luxury" hotel mattresses too soft just because the memory foam topper is too thick; I have to keep track of who has the right bed.

For you, it depends on what you need. Frame digging in suggests you need something firm to spread the load over the whole sofa, then mattress on top.
  • Thanks everyone; looks like mattress topper short term. Futon sounds interesting.
Need to come up with something. It's a tough job.....Poppa's purpose is keeping granddaughter and Nanna happy - they sleep in the bedroom - I take care of everything else.
  • I've had to sleep on the fold out couch due to my snoring a couple times. I usually take the cushions from the dinette and put it on the folded out couch to give extra padding. If I had anyone staying on either option for any long amount of time, I'd put an egg crate or memory foam topper on it like others suggested.
  • I have never had to make our sofa into a bed as we have four bunks but I read this and thought it was a good idea. Cut a swimming noodle down the center and lay it in the divide between the sofa halves. Lay whatever you have decided upon on top of it. I love air mattresses when we are tent camping but like foam as you do not have to worry about it leaking.
And I would not expect my husband to sleep on it. That sounds like the worse in better or worse.
  • I have to say I'm with BossCamper on this one. My kids can sleep on the pullout sofa, I'm sleeping in my bed.

But for you I would get a mattress topper and roll it up in the morning.
  • We put a memory foam mattress over the pill out when needed. In the morning we roll it up and store it out of the way. My daughter and her husband never complained.
