  • Air mattresses are cold. As a camp ranger for the scouts I saw countless examples of people unhappy with them. If used, they should be topped with a foam pad for body heat retention. Air wicks the heat away from your body. Any space larger than 1/4 inch will be subject to convection currents and heat loss/transfer. Trapping dead air in small spaces such as down, foam or hollow fibers that prevents these currents creates an insulated layer.

Air mattresses work well to transfer heat away from you when camping in hot weather but can be too cold in the morning. An air mattress seems to deflate because as the ambient air cools so does the mattress resulting in less pressure. Some just leak.

I use the memory foam topper on my factory mattress for a great night's sleep. It is hard as a rock when cold, so keep it warm if you plan on sleeping on it that night. An electric blanket or heated mattress pad would work well.
  • we considered an air mattress after sleeping in our new northstar the first time.the mattress was uncomfortable to say the lest.we had bad memories of air mattresses from our tenting days though.we ended up buying a memory foam topper from costco and it made a world of difference for a measly hundred bucks.
  • Air mattresses are ok... for a short time. Long term they suck.
  • Last year I bought a 5th wheel that had an air mattress. I don't recall the brand, but it was well constructed. I absolutely did not like it. Through the years, I have had several different air mattresses, and never had one I liked at all, regardless of their cost or quality.

I replaced the air mattress that was in the 5th where with a 6-inch foam mattresses from Walmart. I am exceptionally pleased with the foam mattress.

  • We just bought a Sleep Number bed, talk about expensive! But we have one at home, so we decided to get one for the camper, maybe it will allow us to camp longer, yea!

We have used air mattress alot when Tent camping...

Used a couple of these twin bed size tent beds with slide in air mattress in the tents... Very comfortable being off the ground...

We had same problem with the air pressure changing over night and we was always laying in big depression in the mornings haha...

Probably due from outside air pressure always changing when it got cooler and perhaps it didn't hold pressure all that great. Noticed some other pressured up things doing the same thing so I think normal changing air pressure as the night got cooler was some of the problem...

Changed to a foam mattress and found out it likes to get real hard when it freezes up at night haha... Pillows hard as a rock with the outline of your head in them hehe...

  • GordonThree, so now the house guest will have a "very deflated in the morning" bed :) It stops company from staying past there welcome :)

I tried one years ago in my shadow cruiser, but I found in cooler weather I could never get worm. Plus it deflated.

in current camper I use a memory foam from Amazon.
  • I tried one, since it was a lot lighter than a coil spring or even sponge mattress. Picked up a very expensive one with a built in pump, queen size, rated to hold two people.

Used it a few times, it was always very deflated in the morning.

Also despite having good sheets and a fleece pad between the plastic and myself, I found it very sweaty

It's rolled up in a closet at home now, ready should I have any house guests.
