As we were planning our Alaska jaunt, someone here suggested having three rows of cheap sponges, one left, one center, and one right on the windshield with a section of hardware cloth duct taped in place.
It was a simple cover and worked well, no stone chips. I also fitted some screening in the grill to keep bugs out of condenser/radiator etc.
We wound up taking the ferry from Bellingham, WA but after, were on the CanAm highway for several hundred miles into Tok, AK. The hardware cloth screening was easy on, easy off, those little stones kicked up from trucks were like BB's. We utilzed the internet as we crossed to locate events and places to visit. All National Parks offer great stops but many State and County Parks are worth a visit. We ask for local knowledge to find unusual spots at restaurants, fishing gear stores etc.. The satellite radio was also helpful, we only use it for long trips and shut it down when home. We also have a highway Atlas from Walmart that is a printed map source and also shows all Walmart locations that are very useful for early off, early on highway over nights.
Have a great trip, Alaska is a great treat!
