All electric vehicles?
I guess electrically powered vehicles are coming but seems to me they are presently only a rich person's toy with present technology. By that I mean, they're only good for around town and short trips ...

That is the huge wild card. Because the governments have decided electric "will" be the next step in the evolution that is where the money is currently being funneled. That is the main reason I have been opposed to these tax credits and subsidies as it may stifle the r&d other options. Right now the industry has rolled the dice on electric but only time will tell if this was a mistake.
Get one while you can.
