The technology and infrastructure can all be envisioned and put in place. It's the mindset and will of the public that is currently the biggest challenge.
Technology wise the ball is rolling down hill,however mindset wise the ball is sitting at the bottom of a steep hill;)

You get a lot of overly optimistic early adopters who do more harm than good.
Free fuel is a common one. They assume no cost to recharge...that's patently false and anyone not in one camp or the other sees it as false.
Then you have hidden costs like gas tax...when it's a tiny percentage, they can fly under the radar. When they make up a sizable percentage, the rules will change. Currently (depending on state) somewhere around 1/3 of the cost of a gallon of gas is tax. Add that back on to EV owners and suddenly it's not so great.
