The bottom line is; just as so many people my age, there is no new vehicle in my future. Not gas powered, diesel powered, or electric.
Sure, I would love to have an EV for local trips, but with the current prices it just will not happen! Not a new one, and probably not a used one.
Besides, the current temperature outside is 1 degree F. How well will that EV work at those temps, or even at 20 below zero? How warm will it be inside the vehicle?
I can help you with the last question. Cold weather travel in an EV is superior in every way to a gasser. At minus 20 our car goes from cold and frosty to totally warm and defrosted in 5 minutes...and all from a push of a button on my cell phone from inside my house. The EV heaters can pull up to 5 kw. However, depending on temperature) within about 5 minutes it drops to about 3 kw and then a couple minutes later to about half a kw. It’s a small space so doesn’t take much to keep it warm. Heated seats and steering wheel turned on remotely also make it a nice spot to be when it’s cold.
It is also nice in the summer with AC. Per cool on the way to the car. If I’m headed into the mall when it’s hot I just walk away from the car with the AC on. The car disables as soon as I walk away, stays nice and cool and ready for my return twenty minutes later.
Interestingly, EV sales are highest in cold climate countries like Norway where they are 40 percent ish of all auto sales.
Supplement to my last. Found a picture I shot one cool morning. This is from our first generation Leaf. It has been a great commuter.
