Solar and wind power are now cheaper than fossil fuels. The only reason any of our electricity comes from fossil fuels is that they receive massive government subsidies. In a free market, all our power would come from renewables at this point.
Where? In winter months north of 50 only get 8 hrs or less of daylight with the sun low on the horizon. Not much energy there. BC where I live gets 98% of its electricity from hydro sources but they only supply 18% of the provinces total energy needs. 60% comes from fossil oil and natural gas and the rest from a variety of sources. You would have to cover half the province in solar panels and wind turbines to make that up.
