IIRC....Lithium is:
- Corrosive
- inhaled can cause pulmonary edema
- Is one of the main components in solid rocket fuel
- In contact with water/moisture produces caustic lithium hydroxide
- Is listed on HazMat tables
- Prohibited on carriers with passengers (there is a limit as to how much)
- the explosive process is called thermal runaway...the why of the better lath-ion batteries have thermal control chips embedded on the cathode
- is used in medical treatments
- It is used as an enhancement modifier in grease
- etc
Its thermal expansion is about twice that of aluminum, so heating of their batteries becomes another issue, which if allowed to get too hot, it will burst the casing
The 'known' amount being mined has about the same amount in sea water. So the element has decades of life left before we run out.
For now, the 2nd highest energy density storage material....gasoline is higher
