I have tried many permutations .
I live at 4100 ASL just East of the mighty Cascade Mountain Range .
We can have crummy conditions in the mountain passes .
The net result of my experience is I run real snow tires in the winter ( mounted on separate wheels ) .
I run real HIGHWAY tires in the summer . The kind that make no noise . Mostly Michelin . I did just buy a set of the top rated Continental highway tires for my wife's 4Matic mercedes sedan , instead . Hakkepolitta ? snow tires in winter .
On my pickup I have about 60,000 miles on the highway michelin 265/75R15 LRE tires and they are not to the Wear Bars yet . ( 2002 gmc diesel /allison 4wd , bought new ) The snow tires I replace after 35,000 or so anyway because I need deep tread with good siping .
The initial investment is bigger but the overall cost is not more .
And I have the right tires for the job for each season .
