All year round tires with winter approval

Two of my family's vehicles need new tires. One is a car...a Chevy Cobalt 4 dr. sedan. The other is a 2008 Chevy Colorado light truck with the Z 71 off road package. It's 2WD with a Eaton G 80 locking axle.

I'm looking at getting all year round tires....not all season...but tires that can be used the year round and tires that have that winter severe service winter approval.

The truck is used to tow during the winter...a light trailer with a snowmobile.

Any ideas/experiences of brands/models of tires that are available both for the sedan and the truck ?

We get snow from late October to early April...also very cold weather, ice roads, etc.

I'm in Western Canada , but a similar American state's weather would be North Dakota or Northern Montana.
Thanks in advance.

Nokian have a very good reputation for winter tires the WRG3 is marketed as an all weather tire that carries the snow flake symbol. I think Kal Tire sell them.

My daughter is considering these tires for her sedan. We're checking to see if they come in the right size for my son. A buddy just got some on his 4WD SUV....very pleased with them. I'm in Winterpeg...and you know we're renowned for our hard winters.

2 Wheel drive "off road package"? :?

The idea of a off road 2 WD with locking axle was developed in desert racing, such as the Baja 1000.

High ground clearance, oversize tires, locking rear axle were the focus points of these trucks.

They first used this concept (as far as I know) on pre runner trucks that would make fast full course runs down the rough race route on the Baja years ago.

BTW...my son has driven his truck through 5 years of 5 1/2 month winter per each year, without getting stuck....300 lbs of sand bags...high ground clearance, oversize tires and locking axle...do the job.

We live in a Canadian city that has the dubious distinction of being the coldest city in the world with a population over 600,000...with all the attendant winter, ice, etc. that comes with that.

Winter driving in extreme traction limited conditions, for many here...is a well developed necessity.
  • Off the top of my head.

Some sizes of the BFG A/T KO
    Goodyear Silent Armor
    Goodyear Duratracs

I'd personally pick the Silent Armors. The Duratracs are outstanding in the snow, but are probably more aggressive than you want.
  • Siped BFG AT2s for the truck. I have been using all season radials for my cars for years. We get tons of snow and ice, but our roads are pretty well maintained.

Have you looked at tirerack.com yet?
