Much of the more than doubling you saw was for safety, mpg, and smog, I would like to know how much.
I bought a new Dodge Power Wagon 4 x 4 in 1963 for right at $2,000, (about 2 month's salary) it did not even have seatbelts, nor much else, but a motor and transmission. No catalytic converter, paded dash, air bags, etc. Loved it, it would pull stumps.
As you said one today would be near $60,000, not many of us are making $30,000 a month.
