I disagree with the OP needing to go to a 3/4 ton if he wants to upgrade the truck. He has an absolutely pitiful payload with the current truck. He gets away with it because he's towing a small 4500lb (loaded) trailer and presumably isn't carrying much in the truck bed.
There are plenty of 1/2 ton trucks with payloads upwards of 1600-2000lb that could be well suited to trailers in the 6-7,000lb (loaded) range.
If he's looking at much above 8,000lb (and certainly by 10,000lb), then a 3/4 ton starts to be desirable option.
