I don't know if you can get a dully with a short wheelbase and yes it was be a hard ride.
Saw one down in Florida, but older RAM model.
We have a Reg Cab, 8' bed. 2016 Ram 2500 CTD. Bought it off the lot.
SLT model with the Lux option so some nice "creature comforts". The 2500's rear coils make for a nice ride. But the short wheel base can give some porpoising when towing certain roads. I wanted a short length for city driving and parking, and that has worked out well.
Surprising amount of organized storage behind the seats, hooks to hang thing on. Good enough for groceries and tools I want to keep out of the bed. Don't know if Ford or Chevy have as much space in their Reg cabs, but then they have the 1/2 cab models.
As we're bumper pull, I could add a cap and built some internal storage shelves toward the front and along the sides. With the cap's side lift windows I can easily access my tools and stuff from the side. And I get great visibility off the 4-5 o'clock quadrant.
We love it.
EDIT: With the RAM, it's faster to get at the back of seat storage if you do not have electric seats. With manual seats you just flip a lever and the back tilts forward. With electrics, it takes a long time. We have an electric drivers with lumbar, which I love, while my wife's is manual. For quick storage of groceries, I always go to her side.
