I get those amazing fuel mileage results too especially when I;m going down a 6% grade hill and the RV in Neutral I wonder why ? :h
I'm able to see this and get a little happy when I hit my reset button, Ford 550, while driving, in gear, down a hill too. The computer is just figuring the consumption for that period of time since the previous reset. Like many things, it is fun to have that happy feeling for a bit, until reality returns.
While I don't give much weight to the spikes of each fuel fill up, as there are just too many variables, like tail winds, hills, humidity and season changes to the formulas. I have tracked my MPG by the year. My yearly average has stayed pretty much the same, give or take a .5 mpg variable.
The biggest change I have had has been recently, with the changing of the suspension, wheels and tires of my trailer. Basically it is rolling with less resistance and riding higher and taking advantage of the big mass in front of it (camper and truck). I have seen a consistent 1 to 2 mpg change in my fuel calculations. I will be interested in seeing how my annual fuel MPG average changes for 2016 vs. previous years.
When you are in the double digit range, of fuel mileage, you are just bragging. The real gains come from the true John Wayne approach and you move up from 6.7 mpg to 7.1 mpg. Now that is real improvement, as is the $1 less a gallon fuel reduction we have gotten. That is what makes me smile, at the pump, at each fill up!
