Amazing what people tow with!

Coming home from camping this weekend we hit a bit of a backup on 4 lane highway. All I could see was a semi and a stack of cars next and behind it. Figured it was just someone afraid to pass a big scary semi. I was wrong.

It was a conversion van towing what looked to be a 30' aluminum sided trailer. The trailer was swaying all over the place as he gave it hell to pass the trailer. I pointed it to the gf and said I'll bet he doesn't have any sway control. Sure enough, not only did he have zero sway control, the hitch was too high! The rear of the trailer had to be about 2 feet lower than the tongue! The rear of that poor van was almost off the ground! To make it even better, he had about 6 bikes strapped to the front of the van.

I passed him as quick as possible. Talk about a disaster waiting to happen. I can't imagine how he could even drive that thing with it overloaded and setup so poorly with zero sway controls and cruising along at 60 mph.

I've seen some overloaded trucks/suvs before, but this one take the cake. I saw a jeep liberty towing what looked to be a 23' trailer but at least it was setup correctly and didn't look like it was about to flip over....although I am sure that was overloaded as well.

They should require proof of ownership of a vehicle capable of towing whatever trailer you are trying to register. That would solve a lot of these people going way too small on their rigs. Scary out there.
  • We said he same thing this past weekend. An F150 pulling a 36ft TT similar to the one on my signature with an ATV in the bed. My 2500 gets close to the payload, cant imagine that non HD F150 was anywhere close. The other head scratcher was a mid 2000's Ram 1500 Crew cab with what looked to be about a 35 ft Fifth Wheel. The rear wheels were tucked up inside the fenders it was squatting so bad.

only 18' TT, and manage to stay underweight!

Not you. It was the older style and the trailer was quite a bit longer with tandem axles. Nice jeep and trailer though. That looks like an acceptable setup since the trailer isn't twice as long as the TV :D Same style as the GFs. Can't figure out why they got rid of them for what they have now. If they would had put the current 3.2s in them, they would had been a real winner and fast!
  • Yep see it way too often. I saw an F150 that was way overloaded, no WDH. That truck I swear you could spin the steering wheel with a pinky it was so nose light.
  • Liberty was rated 5,000 lbs and 24 ft long for both the diesel and 3.7 L gasser.

In any case, the rig you spotted was crazy. Every time I see one like that I say a little prayer nobody gets killed and the idiot driving learns a lesson. I suspect the latter is a futile request.

Last one I saw looked like somebody moving on a budget. U-Haul trailer behind an SUV. The rear seat and back end of the SUV was crammed full, roof rack piled high, and trailer also. It was obvious the rear suspension was bottomed out on the stops so that the tail pipe was barely off the ground and the bolt below the hitch ball was getting sanded every time he drove over a white line between lanes. Front end looked light to me, but surely that wasn't why he was having trouble going around curves.

  • It looked pretty good actually. Probably right at the max then. Knowing how much power my GFs Liberty has, I would hate to tow anything other than a bicycle with it though :) Plus the short and narrow wheel-base can't make it that enjoyable at speed.
