I would get chains simply cause some states require you to have them, needed or not.
During the past 35 years, I was only in a position that I could have used chains. I had 2WD, with snow flake tires, and was flat towing my Samurai. I was told at the checkpoint, if I were not towing, with the snowflake marked tires I would be okay to go. Because I was towing I had to have chains. Although I had chains, I opted to wait for the road to be cleared. I waited about thirty minutes.
I agree with getting the chains from Les Swab. Full refund if you do not use them. I also believe in putting them on in your driveway, in the warm part of the day while drinking a cold beer. The chains I have for my 19.5s ain't cheap, but very simple to install. The cost does not mean much if you return them unused.
I do have some questions on chains, but will make a separate post.
